Living on Purpose

Good Morning,

Live on Purpose…This phase has been the closing for every Monday Morning Minute since its inception in 2012. It is a phrase that has been born out of living, learning and growing over the last 40 years of my life and career. The older I get the more it means.

In case you have not discovered it, life moves fast, much faster as you get older. Age 40 to 50 goes faster than 20 to 30 – or so it seems.  So fast in fact, that you can’t believe 10 years passed by. And when you begin to ponder that fact, you realize that not a single year of that time can be recaptured. So, making sure you live with intention and purpose is vital, not only for making the most of our days here on this earth, but also for minimizing the regrets of days wasted.

There two important keys (at least) to living on purpose. Ponder them this morning and this week.

  1. Are you living with your eyes wide open? In other words, have you considered the probable outcomes of the choices you are making? For example, if you are working 70 hours a week and missing family dinners, your kid’s ballgames, and quality time with your spouse are you OK with where that will leave you? The purpose in living with your eyes wide open is not simply a judgement about whether the choices are wise. It is more about making them with awareness of likely outcomes and consequences. Once you have done that you are free to make whatever choice you wish, even if it is a dumb choice.  At least you will have peace having made it in the full knowledge that it was dumb.

  • What is the “Big Why”? Ultimately, when you come to a fork in the road in life you will make the choice you make because there is something at your core – some value or over-riding life purpose that will cause you to choose one fork over the other. When you have a big decision to make, ask yourself what is the “Big Why” behind why I am considering this.  For example, if I am considering taking on debt with a new home, what is the primary factor behind this move? What do I expect the new home to accomplish for me? More space for family, more ability to entertain, or a symbol of success.  Answering the “Big Why” question with brutal honesty can be a huge help. It can help bring valuable perspective and awareness. It can make some big decisions simpler.

Pondering these two keys will go a long way in helping you capture the most out of your journey and leave you with fewer regrets. If you need help, contact me.
